Sanguisorba menziesii (Burnet) Sanguisorba menziesii is a bold and eye-catching burnet that makes a strong statement in the late-summer border. It produces attractive mounds of blue-green pinnate foliage from which upright stems carry deep burgundy-red, bottlebrush-shaped flowerheads from early summer through to autumn. A superb plant for pollinators, it is particularly attractive to bees and butterflies. With its rich, dark flower colour and upright habit, Sanguisorba menziesii combines beautifully with grasses, Achillea, Echinacea, and other prairie-style perennials. It works well in the middle of a border and is equally at home in naturalistic or more structured plantings. Its fine-textured foliage provides interest from spring, and the flowerheads remain attractive as they fade into autumn.
