Description Specifications Setup & FAQ The Versa Wireless DIM-ZW is an in-wall Z-Wave dimmer switch built on Z-Wave 800 Series Long Range. It is a wired smart dimmer that replaces an ordinary single-pole or 3-way wall switch and puts a hardwired lighting circuit under hub control, with a brightness level rather than just on and off. On Long Range it reaches up to 1300 ft straight to the controller, or 330 ft (100 m) per hop on classic mesh. It dims real lighting loads: 600 W incandescent and 300 W dimmable LED or CFL. In a ganged box the incandescent rating derates to 500 W in a 2-gang and 400 W in a 3-gang. A neutral is required, the terminals take 14 AWG copper only, and the wall box must be single-gang and at least 2-3/4 in. (70 mm) deep. As a Z-Wave LED dimmer switch it trims at both ends. Set the minimum and maximum brightness from the hub with parameters 11 and 12. Or set them at the wall: bottom paddle 5x for the minimum, top paddle 5x for the maximum. That is how you match the dimmer to a fixture without pulling it back out of the box. Here is the part that catches installers out. Association group 2 is set up from the hub. Once it is, a paddle press sends a Basic Set on or off command straight to as many as five other devices. That path is device to device, so it keeps working with the hub offline - but it runs on a classic mesh network only. In Long Range mode the dimmer has one neighbor, the controller, so the same behavior has to be built as a hub automation instead. Configuration parameters work the same either way. Pick mesh when you want the dimmer to drive another device on its own; pick Long Range when distance to the hub is the problem. That is also how it joins in Long Range mode. Double-tap either paddle to fire a scene. To join a classic mesh instead, set the controller to add a device and press the top paddle three times quickly. The LAMP-ZW2 plug-in dimmer covers lamps and portable fixtures where there is no wall box. DIM-ZW questions installers ask Does the DIM-ZW require a neutral wire? Yes. The DIM-ZW is a neutral-required in-wall Z-Wave dimmer switch. Line, load, neutral and ground all land on the device, plus a traveler in a 3-way install. There is no no-neutral mode. Line and load are not interchangeable, so check which is which before you wire it. Every terminal takes 14 AWG copper only. Check the box has a neutral before you pick this dimmer for that location. Can the DIM-ZW be used as a Z-Wave 3 way dimmer? Yes. The second location stays an ordinary mechanical 3-way switch, not another smart switch, not another dimmer, and not an add-on. Put the DIM-ZW in the box that has line power. Its LOAD terminal feeds the light directly. The mechanical switch gets two wires. A white wire goes from its COMMON screw to the neutral splice. The red traveler goes from the DIM-ZW's TRAVELER terminal to a traveler screw. The other traveler screw stays unused, and no load current passes through the second switch at all. If the wiring in the wall does not match that, stop and call an electrician. Does the DIM-ZW work with dimmable LED bulbs? Yes. As a Z-Wave LED dimmer switch it carries up to 300 W of dimmable LED or CFL, and up to 600 W of incandescent. In a ganged box, derate the incandescent figure to 500 W in a 2-gang and 400 W in a 3-gang to allow for heat. Use bulbs marked dimmable - that rating on the lamp is what lets the dimmer hold a smooth level at the bottom of its range. Lighting loads only, within the ratings above. The safety note on this page lists the load types the DIM-ZW is listed for, and read it before you pick a circuit. How do I add, pair, or reset the DIM-ZW? To add it: set the controller to add a device, then press the TOP paddle three times quickly. The blue LED flashes. Solid green for two seconds means it worked. Solid red for two seconds means it failed, so try again. To remove it: set the controller to remove a device, then press the BOTTOM paddle three times quickly. To factory reset it: press the BOTTOM paddle twice quickly, then hold the third press for at least ten seconds. The LED flashes purple, then holds solid for two seconds when the reset is done. SmartStart is how the dimmer joins in Long Range mode. Enable Long Range on the controller, then scan the QR code on the front of the device. It joins on its own within ten minutes of being powered. Adding it by paddle joins the classic mesh instead. Can I set the minimum and maximum brightness? Yes, and it takes about a minute. Dimmable fixtures vary in how far down they will run cleanly, so the DIM-ZW lets you set where its own range starts and stops. Raising the minimum brightness matches the dimmer to the fixture that is actually on the circuit. From the hub: set parameter 11 for the minimum (0-99, default 10) and parameter 12 for the maximum (default 99). At the wall: press the bottom paddle five times quickly. The LED flashes orange slowly and the light drops to the current minimum. Hold either paddle to adjust, then press the bottom paddle five times again to confirm. Green flashes three times when it saves. The top paddle five times sets the maximum the same way. Ten seconds with no input exits without saving. How far does the DIM-ZW reach on Z-Wave Long Range? Up to 1300 ft straight to the controller on Long Range, and 330 ft (100 m) per hop on classic mesh. The two numbers are not comparable. On Long Range the dimmer talks directly to the hub, so 1300 ft is one link with nothing in between. On classic mesh 330 ft is the length of a single hop, and the network reaches further by chaining hops through other mains-powered devices. Which one you want depends on the box. A dimmer at the end of a long run, in a detached garage or a basement corner, is the case Long Range was built for. A dimmer in the middle of a house full of Z-Wave devices is usually better on mesh, where it can also repeat for its neighbors. Does device-to-device association work when the DIM-ZW is on Long Range? It works on classic mesh, and this is the one people get wrong. Association group 2 is set from the gateway, and once configured a paddle press sends Basic Set on or off straight to as many as five other devices. That path needs neighbors. In Long Range mode the dimmer has exactly one neighbor, the controller, so build the same behavior as a hub automation triggered by the paddle instead. Configuration parameters work either way. Choose mesh when you want the dimmer to drive another device on its own; choose Long Range when distance to the hub is the constraint. Does the DIM-ZW support scenes from the paddle? Yes, through Central Scene. A double-tap on either paddle sends a scene trigger to the hub, and the top and bottom paddles send different ones. The useful part on a dimmer is that a double-tap does not move the level of the fixture the DIM-ZW controls. So one wall plate can set a whole-room lighting scene on the way past while the light in that room stays where it was. How do I change a bulb without shutting off the breaker? Pull the air-gap tab at the bottom of the paddle out. That mechanically cuts power to the dimmer and the fixture, so the bulb can be changed. Push it back in to restore normal operation. For installing or removing the dimmer itself, always turn off the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester. What is the difference between the DIM-ZW and the SWITCH-ZW? Both are Versa Z-Wave 800 Long Range in-wall devices on the same radio. Both fit a single-gang box on a single-pole or 3-way circuit with a neutral. The difference is what they do to the light. The DIM-ZW sets a brightness level, rated to 600 W incandescent and 300 W dimmable LED or CFL, with a settable minimum and maximum. That suits living areas, bedrooms, and any fixture meant to run at a level rather than full output. The SWITCH-ZW is the in-wall light switch for those same circuits when they only need a state, with its own load ratings on its product page. Pick the DIM-ZW when the circuit needs dimming, and the SWITCH-ZW when it needs switching. What is the difference between the DIM-ZW and the LAMP-ZW2? Both are Versa Z-Wave 800 Long Range dimmers on the same radio.
