It reads like surf breaking across dark volcanic sand, seen from above. The water runs through steel blue and slate grey, the foam is built up in thick white plaster, and grey shadow pools in every fold where the relief catches the light. The blue is the part photographs never quite show. It shifts from a cool grey-blue in the shallows to a deeper slate where the water gathers, and the dark sand behind it is flecked with white rather than flat black. There is far more tonal range in it than a photo suggests. The relief is built up by hand in micro-plaster, so the surface is genuinely raised. Run your hand across it and you feel every edge.
