He was himself a most unusual man, a stockman who could read and write; a cattlemen who knew Latin; a drover who kept his courage high by thinking of Homer’s heroes. He was, as well as a stockman, a gold miner and a pearler. He writes as if the 1880s were just last week. The scenes he witnessed were as bizarre and brightly coloured as any in America's wild west.
