"Paulownia Shibori" Vintage Underkimono
This listing is for a traditional underkimono (juban in Japanese) designed to be worn beneath a woman's kimono. Bold ribbons of scarlet sweep across an almost-white, whisper-pale pink background, creating a wonderfully graphic backdrop for paulownia and other stylized florals worked in intricate kanoko (fawn spot) shibori. Dense fields of tiny individually bound resist dots give the motifs remarkable texture and definition, while paulownia traditionally carries associations with good fortune, prestige, and feminine grace. Its exceptionally long, flowing sleeves identify it as a furisode-style juban, designed to be worn beneath a young woman's formal furisode kimono. Underkimono make wonderful robes because they are cut shorter than outer kimono, so they do not have the extra length that is typically folded at the waist for traditional dressing. The lighter weight and streamlined shape make them easy to slip on and wear without added bulk. Perfect for the beach, poolside lounging, summer cover ups, or effortless layering at home or out and about. The belt is not included, but if you'd like to wear or display this kimono with a traditional obi, browse our selection of OBI BELTS. Although it isn't traditional, if you'd like one of our simple cotton sashes to wear with this, we'll choose a complimenting color (see Add a Sash? above). See the videos below to learn how to dress in kimono.
