Ken and Valerie Shelton Pink Tulip Bowl

Ken and Valerie Shelton divide their work very clearly: Ken makes the pot and Valerie paints it. Here, Ken’s clean, flared bowl gives Valerie a broad surface for loose pink tulips and dense green leaves. Her brushwork is confident but controlled; the narrow black foot and dark rim give the exuberant painting a crisp graphic structure. Valerie trained in fashion and textiles, which is evident in her instinctive handling of pattern and colour. She paints entirely freehand, without transfers or guidelines, mixing her underglaze colours by eye. No two bowls are identical. Signed “Valerie Shelton” to the base.
