Hermannsburg days
We lived at Arrkapa outstation, where we kept all the horses, it was a good place. Family used to ride the horses early in the morning, about 7 o’clock. Go into the bush to find other horses – brumbies – so they could put them in the yard. All the men would bring all the horses from the bush and keep them for riding and for selling to the white people. Then my uncle would buy all those nice clothes, cowboy clothes from the shop in Hermannsburg. There were women clothes in that shop too. Sometimes we went all the way to Palm Vallery from Ntaria for hunting and swimming. We rode horses and took camels with little wagons on the back. All of us kids and family. Bumping and riding over all the rocks. Catching fish and cooking it there and sleeping the night with swags. I used to ride a horse with no saddle. I was a good rider. My horse was blue, I can’t remember its name, maybe it was Bluey! BETH EBATARINJA
