Some pieces tell me exactly what they want to become. When I found this little Madonna and Child, I couldn’t picture bright colors or a traditional finish. Instead, I imagined something that looked as though it had quietly lived on the shelf of an old European home for generations. I hand-painted her in soft, muted colors and finished her hood with a rich plum brocade inspired by antique textiles and worn church vestments. The delicate gold detailing catches the light just enough, while the gentle aging gives her the feeling of a cherished heirloom rather than a newly painted piece. She may be small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but every inch of her was painted with intention—including the back. I never believe the back of a sculpture should be forgotten simply because it’s turned away.
