1845 James Dixon & Sons Antique Pewter Meat Warming Dish

A beautiful antique pewter meat warming dish made by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, England, in 1845. Founded in 1806, James Dixon & Sons became one of Sheffield’s most admired makers of silver and Britannia metal. Britannia metal is a tin-based alloy that was harder and more durable than traditional pewter, while retaining that wonderfully mellow pewter color and character. I love the beautiful details on this one. The top has unusual draining grooves that branch across the surface like a little tree, ending in a charming stump design. The ornate handles have the scrolling detail so beloved in the early Victorian period, and four beautifully shaped acanthus-leaf feet give it an especially handsome presence. A lift-up flap allows hot water to be added to the concealed compartment beneath, keeping a roast, ham, or other large cut of meat warm while serving. It is in good antique condition, with the marks and wear you would expect from a piece that was genuinely used for family dinners and holiday gatherings. Wonderful to use at your own table, and absolutely beautiful filled with food and brought to the center of a holiday gathering. 14-1/2" x 9-3/8" x 2-7/8"h.
