Hiku Tohorā Raukaraka - Greenstone Whale Tail Pendant

From the discovery of Aotearoa by the original whale rider Paikea, tohorā (whales) have been highly regarded kin or tūpuna to Māori and are the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, the atua (spirit) of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death. This hiku tohorā was carved by Aaron Marshall from raukaraka pounamu sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, whakarei with unaunahi. It measures 67mm by 55mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.
