ELLIOTI x CONVICT CICHLID Hybrid 8-10CM
ELLIOTI x CONVICT CICHLID Hybrid The slow waters of the lower and middle Rio Papaloapan river valleys in eastern Mexico are home to these fish. They usually gather in groups over sandy areas with plenty of driftwood and leaf litter for hiding. The water can be murky in many spots, leading to little plant life. Since these fish like to search the sand for food, it’s important to keep them in an aquarium with fine, soft sand. They will eat food pieces and push out anything they can’t digest through their gills, so sharp sand should be avoided. Provide plenty of cover with driftwood and smooth rocks, while keeping an open swimming area in front. Although plants are not a big part of their natural habitat, sturdy plants can be added since these cichlids are not very destructive. Adding leaf litter, like dried Indian almond leaves, can help create a more natural setting, but make sure there is enough sand space for the fish to sift through. Maintaining good water quality is crucial for their health, as high nitrate levels can lead to problems. The aquarium should be at least 4 feet long for young fish and ideally 5-6 feet for adults, as they can be territorial during breeding. While they can breed in smaller tanks, they will display more natural behavior in larger spaces. Generally, these cichlids are not aggressive outside of breeding time and often resolve minor conflicts through bluffing.
