2024 Rivers-Marie "Occidental Ridge" Pinot Noir

Rivers-Marie is a small, highly regarded California winery founded in 2002 by winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and his wife Genevieve Marie Welsh, known for crafting limited-production Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon from top vineyard sites across the Sonoma Coast and Napa Valley. Built on a philosophy of letting each vineyard speak for itself, the wines are typically single-vineyard expressions made with minimal intervention, emphasizing balance, structure, and a strong sense of place. Production remains intentionally small, often just a few hundred cases per wine, with most bottles sold through a mailing list, which has helped the label earn a loyal following and a reputation as one of California’s more sought-after “cult” producers. "There are extra dimensions to the Occidental Ridge. Every aspect of the wine seems to have one additional element or layer. Pennyroyal mint is there on the nose along with some orange zest, wild herbs and medium black fruits. Acidity and tannin, some in the form of 15% whole cluster, give a bigness to the wine that is uncommon for the vintage. The acidity contributes a mouthwatering quality that keeps the wine light.
