Ernest Heber Thompson 1891-1971. New Zealand-British School. Early 20th.Century Watercolour drawing. The Beach, an evocative coastal landscape study of sands, beach huts and striped tents, so of the period. Signed and dated lower left 1925. Provenance: with Michael Parkin London. Ca.1980 Private collection UK thereafter. 31by 22.5 cms. to mounted image. Draughtsman, printmaker and painter, Thompson was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. Serving with the 3rd New Zealand Rifles during WWI, he was wounded in 1917 and was sent to England to recover, remaining there after the wars end, an army scholarship enabling him to study at the Slade under Henry Tonks, Philip Wilson Steer and Frank Short. He travelled and exhibited widely in Europe and in London at the Royal Academy and The Royal Society of Painters Etchers (elected member in 1939), A retrospective exhibition was held at Dunedin Art Gallery in 1970. In addition to the British Museum, his work is held in the New Zealand National Collection of War Art, the V & A and the Walker Art Gallery.
