Afghan Kilim Door Mat
This is a brand new authentic Kilim rug, handmade in Afghanistan. Unlike knotted pile rugs, kilims are woven using a weft-faced technique that creates a flat, reversible surface which is highly durable and lightweight. Kilim rugs are one of the most common rugs woven in Afghanistan, often consisting of geometric medallions (lozenges, diamonds, hexagons) and bold colours derived from madder root (reds), indigo (blues), pomegranate rind (yellows), walnut husk or oak galls (browns and blacks). They are ubiquitous to Central Asia and Northern Africa, which suit use in harsh, dry climates as they would historically be used by nomadic people. They are low maintenance due to their robust and simple weaving design. These rugs are woven all across Afghanistan, particularly in the northern provinces of Afghanistan (Faryab, Jowzjan, Balkh). There are also different variations of kilims depending on their origin - Turkmen kilims have diamond lattice patterns of red and black, Maimana kilims have bold geometric patterns and dark earthy colours, and Chubi kilims have high-contrast colour combinations.
