Uncle Alec's Black Knight Sweet Pea
Uncle Alec’s Black Knight Sweet Pea. (Lathyrus odoratus) This unique selection of sweet pea was found in a cream can in the root cellar of my great Uncle Alec's house, who past away in the late 1970’s. My father thought it would be worthy of giving the peas a try that spring. As the story goes, approximately 100 peas were lined out and only 18 grew, but they were incredibly aromatic, dark-maroon coloured blooms that lasted most of the summer. We have been growing these for years now and have never been disappointed. This heirloom has dark burgundy-black flowers with a hint of ruby red variation. 90 days to maturity 20 seeds per packet Planting Instructions: Starting indoors: Scarify seeds by nicking or filing a notch (pre-soaking for 2-3 hours in warm water or a weak solution of Chamomile tea may also increase germination %). - Sow 1/2" deep into cell flats or preferred deep-cell seedling container, 4-5 weeks before planting out.
