A Bizen Chawan by Hiroshi Goseki, a ceramic artist based in Ibaraki Prefecture. “Hiyama” is the name of the area in Ibaraki where the artist currently has his kiln. Across the front of the bowl, vivid hi-iro red spreads dramatically, while at its center a softly emerging nuke area opens up like a glimpse into outer space. The entire chawan is animated by the interplay of hi-iro, nuke, and ash-glaze kiln transformations, creating a richly varied surface while retaining the rustic strength characteristic of unglazed, high-fired Bizen ware. Inside the bowl, subtle flows of ash glaze add further depth, while a distinct nuke effect appears beside the foot, forming a refined and composed landscape. Goseki’s characteristically soft, rounded form sits comfortably in the hands, and the excellent handling of the bowl is another of its great attractions. Chance and intention overlap throughout the firing, capturing the full pleasure and expressive power of yakishime ceramics.
