Gansu, circa 1920 This characterful cabinet from Gansu dates from the early twentieth century, with a muted blue green finish contrasting with warm ochre tones and exposed wood. The surface is richly distressed, bringing out the grain and texture of the pine wood. A pale rectangular painting spans the centre of the front, showing pink and red flowers including peonies - a symbool for high rank and status - and small yellow butterflies representing longevity and marital happiness. The original fixed front panels have been adapted into two cupboard doors, retaining the painted decoration while making the interior easily accessible. Small metal drop handles complete the doors, which open to reveal a generous cupboard divided by a single removable shelf. Thick outer frames, panelled sides and sturdy straight legs give the cabinet a simple, substantial appearance, while a narrow opening in the lower apron adds an unusual detail. A lovely choice for a hallway, living room or dining room, the cabinet provides useful storage for crockery, glasses or other household items. Its softly faded colours and delicate floral painting would bring warmth and interest to any interior.
