The frosted dial of this King Quartz has a fine, almost snow-like texture, with applied markers and a neatly framed calendar that let the details do the talking. Its angular lugs and metal bracelet give the design its unmistakable late-1970s character. Reference 9923-7020 comes from the Twin Quartz generation, when Seiko was treating the pursuit of accuracy as serious watchmaking rather than simply a cheaper alternative to a mechanical movement. The result is a watch that wears its technology discreetly: a tidy everyday design with a fascinating chapter of Japanese engineering behind it. A BIT OF TRIVIA Temperature is one of quartz's quiet enemies: as it changes, so does a crystal's frequency. Seiko's Twin Quartz solution used a second crystal to sense those changes and help correct the timekeeping of the first. The Seiko Museum dates the introduction to 1978. OUR THOUGHTS What catches our eye here is the contrast between the understated silver frosted dial and the confidence of the case and bracelet. It feels very much of its time without becoming a caricature of the seventies. We can picture it being worn regularly rather than kept away as an engineering curiosity, and that is a big part of its appeal: you get to enjoy a handsome Seiko while carrying a genuinely interesting bit of watchmaking history on your wrist.
