Very rare Italian display cabinets by Studio Grau Rome, Italy, 1977 custom made

A truly exceptional find: a rare, bespoke set of display cabinets commissioned in 1977, created specifically for a private residence in Rome. Almost half a century later, this extraordinary ensemble remains a remarkable example of architectural design, craftsmanship and artistic vision. What makes this discovery so special is its completeness. The set comes with all the original paper drawings and the client's original commission, offering a fascinating insight into the creative process behind a unique piece of design history. The cabinets were commissioned from Studio GRAU (Gruppo Romano Architetti e Urbanisti), the influential Roman collective founded in 1964 by fourteen architects. Known for its experimental approach to architecture and urban planning, Studio GRAU became an important voice in the evolution of postmodern design and participated in the First Venice Architecture Biennale in 1980. Designed and made as a one-off commission for this particular house, the cabinets were never intended as a standard production piece. Their proportions, presence and architectural character make them feel less like conventional furniture and more like an integrated work of art. The beauty lies not only in their appearance, but also in the story they tell: a personal commission, an original design concept and the craftsmanship required to bring that vision to life. The surviving documentation adds an exceptional layer of authenticity and historical interest. This is more than a set of display cabinets. It is a tangible piece of Italian architectural history, representing a moment in time when furniture, architecture and art could become one. A rare opportunity for collectors, architects, interior designers and lovers of exceptional Italian design to acquire a unique ensemble with an extraordinary provenance.
