RUH KHUS - High quality wild Vetiver roots oil / traditional process (India)
Pure Wild Vetiver Roots Essential Oil Traditionally distilled by deg bhapka Wild Roots. Copper Vessel. Ancient Fire. Artisan process The Soul of the earth The ancient traditional method preserves the root’s full, living character. Drawn from the dark, aromatic tangle of life below the surface of the earth, this oil carries the cooling breath and the deep joy of summer earth welcoming the first monsoon rains. The Profile Deep, rooty, earthy, green, softly leathery, with subtle sweet and cooling undertones. The opening is notoriously green, intensely earthy, and immediately evokes, fresh rain, wet grass and a rich soil breathing under rain. This oil offers a smooth vivid petrichor experience. Because vetiver grows deep underground, its roots absorb trace compounds like geosmin, which is the molecule responsible for the smell of petrichor. As it settles, it transitions into the classic rich, dark green, woody, and subtly smoky vetiver profile. This aromatic gem can be added to a natural attar or perfume blend to provide an unparalleled, enduring, and soulful green-earth base note. It lends depth, elegance, and tenacity to botanical compositions. This oil is an invitation to experience wild Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) as a living, breathing entity, not as a mere commodity. This is not the sharp, smoky, mass-produced oil of commerce. This is true high quality Ruh Khus a title reserved for the most profound, hydro-distilled essence, crafted not in a factory, but through centuries old artisan methods. Longevity Ruh Khus is dense with heavy sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenols (like khusimol). These molecules have high boiling points and very low volatility. They act as natural fixatives, anchoring themselves tightly to any surface they touch. Traditional Ruh Khus possesses legendary longevity, easily lasting anywhere from 12 to 24+ hours on the skin and several days to weeks on clothing. The robe is a gorgeous dark emerald, and the consistency is thick. A single drop goes a very long way. The Scentient experience Cooling. Grounding. Protective. Contemplative. Valued for its ability to calm the senses and connect self and surroundings. A scent for heat-heavy days, quiet evenings, ritual use, natural perfumery, and those drawn to the ancient language of scent. Curing Like good oud or sandwalwood oils this is an oil designed for long term curing and aging. This is a new batch distilled in the ealry spring of 2026. Freshly distilled, the oil is a wild, untamed beast. Over first three years, a quiet molecular dance unfolds: the harsher and muddier edges oxidize into a smooth, velvety leather, while the fierce, swampy grass notes mellow into a breathtakingly crisp, cooling petrichor that perfectly mirrors a monsoon rain striking parched earth. By the fifth year, the oil has deepened into a thick, dark emerald nectar; the restless smoke has completely receded, leaving behind a profoundly grounding, sweet-woody root accord that clings to the skin like an ancient, timeless secret of the soil. There is a dedicated speicalist market for vintage high quality ruh khus. On the topic of curing, see our dedicated Heatrnotes blog post : How do Essential Oils and Attars Age ? The Joys - and Practicalities - of Curing the Ingredients of Natural Perfumery The production Process Our Khus begins its journey in the wild, untamed tracts of rural India, where the vetiver grass grows not in neat plantation rows, but as a sovereign beings, mixing with other living plants and mircroorganisms, sending its fragrant roots deep into the earth over years and years. These are not the short, fleshy roots of cultivated vetiver; these are mesemrizingly long, gnarled wild tendrils and rich with the concentrated essence of the earth. We work with skilled wild-harvesters who read the land, harvesting manually only mature roots with reverence, leaving the mother plant and the fragile ecosystem intact. This slow, patient growth is the foundation of its profound depth. This is followed by a complex process of gentle cleansing of the roots that need to carefully preserve the microscopic, delicate outer root fibers, which house a significant portion of the compounds that contribute to the petrichor profile. This is followed by a drying process under deep shade. All also done manually. The roots need then to be chopped into precise size segments and soaked before the traditional distillation process. Hydrodistillation in copper stills yields very different results than the industrially used stainless steel, as it chemically reacts with the volatile compounds stripping away the harsh edges, and offering a far smoother silkier oil. This expands the oil's depth, adding a faint, natural sweetness beneath the a grassy-green top notes- Steel, on the contrary yields more sharp, bitter or at times rubbery top notes.
