Black Nephrite Jade Pendant, 14K Gold Tree & Falling Leaves

A large vintage pendant of polished black nephrite jade, 51mm in diameter and 4mm thick, with a deep, glossy surface. A sculpted 14k yellow gold tree is applied to the face, its textured branches bearing brushed-gold leaves, with a few leaves drifting down the disc as if the tree were letting go of its autumn foliage. Pear-shaped jade accents in white, peach and vermilion are set among the branches, with one in black. All the accents are natural, untreated jade, jadeite or nephrite. The bail is 14k yellow gold with a small floral cap. The pendant weighs 26 grams in total. In Chinese tradition, falling leaves carry a quiet meaning. The idiom 落叶归根 (luò yè guī gēn), “fallen leaves return to their roots,” speaks of coming home and of belonging to one’s origins. A single falling leaf can also signal the turning of the season (一叶知秋), and in classical poetry autumn leaves evoke the passage of time and the beauty of impermanence.
