2023 Chardonnay White Cap
2023 White Cap Chardonnay | $100 Every vintage at Dobbin Estate begins with a singular, uncompromising pursuit: the Flagship blend. An orchestration designed to capture the balanced, complete voice of our benchland. Yet during blending trials, the barrel bench occasionally unearths an anomaly of such commanding gravitas that to dilute it into the greater whole would be an injustice to the vintage. The White Cap designation is born of these rare revelations. Where our Flagship is the full symphony, White Cap is the solo: raw, focused, and undeniably arresting. For the first time in our history, this mantle departs from Riesling to present our inaugural White Cap Chardonnay. It was not planned; its sheer physical presence simply demanded to stand alone. The Expression Reared entirely in barrel, the 2023 White Cap Chardonnay reveals a shadowy, architectural depth rarely encountered on the Bench. It is a wine defined by visceral heft and an imposing, deliberate weight. The aromatics open with striking dramatic contrast. A high-toned frame of lemon zest, chamomile, and struck-flint reduction gives way to something far denser and brooding beneath: rich lemon meringue, bruised orchard pear, and a dark, anchoring core of roasted hazelnut. This savoury, roasted element pulls the wine downward, lending an undercurrent of brooding depth that teeters on the edge of the savoury and the profound. On the palate, the wine commands attention through scale and tactile friction. It moves across the tongue with expansive volume - creamy, layered, and uncompromisingly opulent yet anchored by an authoritative structural tension. The finish is slow and resonant, coated in toasted hazelnut skins, dense stone fruit, and a persistent, shadowed minerality that lingers long after the glass is set down. Terroir & Technique Origin: Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula Vinification: Singular outlier lot, barrel fermented, extended lees immersion Aromatics & Profile: Roasted hazelnut, lemon meringue, chamomile, juicy pear, dark flint Palate: Broad-shouldered, viscous, brooding, deeply structured Potential: Immense structural density built for a decade or more of cellar evolution TA 6.21 | pH 3.51 | Alc 13.5 | RS 2 g/L
