Browse the full Karakul collection. Design The drawing follows the classical rugs of Oushak (also written Ushak or Usak) in western Anatolia. Large, many-petalled rosette medallions sit in stepped, cross-shaped compartments, linked by sweeping arabesque scrolls and slender vines; a smaller lobed medallion marks the centre, with half-medallions at head and foot. A border of reciprocal leaf and palmette motifs in soft grey-blue, held between narrow guard stripes, frames the field. What sets this piece apart is how quietly the design is told. Pattern and ground are held so close in tone that the rug reads almost tone-on-tone from a distance; the medallions, scrolls and small blossoms come forward only as you move around it, or as the light changes through the day. Colour The ground is a warm ivory moving into cream and pale champagne, with a softly faded, washed look. The drawing is picked out in faded beige, powder blue and the faintest touch of dusty rose, while the border carries a muted grey-blue. It is a palette made for calm rooms: natural stone, pale oak, linen, limewashed or white walls and neutral upholstery — minimalist and understated interiors where texture and fine detail matter more than strong colour. Material and Quality The pile is 100 % wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation. At approximately 360,000 to 400,000 knots per square metre — roughly 230 to 260 kpsi — the knotting is fine enough to carry the small blossoms, sprigs and scroll lines cleanly, even at such low contrast. At around 18 kg the rug lies flat and settled on the floor. Bedroom: placed under the lower two-thirds of a king or super-king bed, it frames the bed generously on both sides. Study or dining room: anchors a desk and reading chair, or a table for four to six.
