Seed - Nepenthes mira x macrophylla Pablo F. 10-2026
The mother plant is Nepenthes mira, a highland species from the Philippines. It was described in 1998, and the name means wonderful, which fits it well. It makes big, rounded lower pitchers with a wide, glossy peristome, and coloring that runs from yellow green all the way to deep red on a good plant. It is still uncommon in US collections. The pollen parent is macrophylla, provided by Pablo F. as part of a collaboration on this cross. This species is endemic to the summit area of Mount Trus Madi in Sabah, Borneo, growing in true ultra highland conditions. It is best known for a peristome lined with long, curved teeth, putting it right alongside villosa and edwardsiana as one of the most ornate pitchers in the genus. Putting macrophylla's teeth onto mira's chunky pitchers and wide peristome is a cross I have been excited about. Both parents are highlanders, and the seedlings should be more forgiving on temperature than pure macrophylla, with real potential for fat, colorful pitchers carrying a toothy, flared peristome.
