The men's white poplin shirt, with a paper feel A men's white poplin shirt is judged first by the hand. This one is dry and dense, what is called a paper feel: it crackles slightly under the fingers, and that is what lets it hold a straight collar without any starch. The hold comes from the weave, not from a finish that would wash out. The white is an optical white, frank, that leans neither ecru nor blue. It demands a dense poplin: on a light cloth, the skin would show through. It is recognised by three things: its weight, its coolness to the touch, and an iridescence that changes with the angle. A resin button stays warm, light, and its reflection does not move. Mother-of-pearl does not scratch under the iron; it is, however, more brittle, a compromise you accept on a shirt made to last. A very tight plain weave Poplin is woven with a warp thread finer than the weft thread. This difference creates fine horizontal ribs, almost invisible, and makes the cloth smooth, strong and barely transparent, which matters doubly on a white. Originally, poplin combined a silk warp with a weft of linen, cotton or wool; ours is entirely cotton. Its name comes from "papeline", attested in 1667, after Poperinge, a Flemish town famous from the 13th to the 16th century for its cloth. The shirt is made in Morocco. The size guide helps you decide. How to wear a men's white poplin shirt On its own, sleeves rolled up, with a beige chino, as in our photos: optical white works all year. Collar out over a navy lambswool sweater, the safest formula in the wardrobe. Under a work jacket, the contrast between the crisp poplin and the raw canvas avoids an over-dressed effect. With navy corduroy trousers, it dresses a winter outfit. Care Machine washable at home: 30 °C (86 °F), short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent; bleach ends up yellowing white instead of reviving it. No tumble dryer and no fabric softener. Air dry, then iron while still slightly damp: poplin then irons without effort and recovers its dry drape.
