Justice and DeFreitas previously played together in a surf rock ensemble, where they developed the Western guitar tones and heavy use of spring reverb that would become central to Aunt Cynthia's Cabin. The band's name came from a fictional 1970s murder mystery novel invented by the trio during a drunken night, fitting their interest in strange, heavy, and slightly uncanny territory. The band began as a self-recording project using a home-built analog-meets-digital setup. In 2019, they travelled from San Diego to Austin, Texas to record Misty Woman with producer Adrian Quesada at Electric Deluxe Recorders. Originally released by Nasoni Records in 2020, Misty Woman later returned on vinyl and CD through Black Throne Productions in 2025 with the addition of "Magic Touch." With Aunt Cynthia’s Cabin, the band returned to a more self-contained recording process, working from an isolated barn in Camp Verde, Arizona. The result continues Aunt Cynthia's Cabin's combination of psychedelic rock, surf guitar, desert atmosphere, and heavy rock. Black Throne Productions is releasing Aunt Cynthia’s Cabin on vinyl, CD, and digital formats December 18, 2026.
