Empress Drive Analog Overdrive Pedal
The Empress Drive is an analogue overdrive pedal designed around flexibility and harmonic control rather than a single fixed voicing. Instead of locking players into one particular style of breakup, it provides extensive control over how the overdrive stage reacts, saturates, compresses, and responds to playing dynamics. At the centre of the design is a pre-overdrive Midrange control that shapes which frequencies hit the clipping stage hardest. Unlike traditional overdrives that apply most EQ shaping after distortion has already occurred, the Empress Drive lets you determine the harmonic structure feeding the gain stage itself. This changes not only the tone, but also the feel, compression, articulation, and breakup character of the pedal. The result is a drive pedal capable of moving from subtle edge-of-breakup enhancement through to saturated, harmonically dense overdrive while remaining highly responsive to guitar volume and picking dynamics. Pre-Clipping Midrange Shaping The sweepable Midrange control sits before the clipping stage, allowing detailed control over how the pedal distorts. This lets you: - Emphasise lower mids for thicker breakup - Push upper mids for articulation and bite - Tighten the response by reducing harmonic density - Alter how the pedal responds dynamically to picking and volume changes Rather than imposing a single overdrive character, the circuit can be reshaped to suit different guitars, amps, and playing styles. Flexible Gain Staging The built-in boost section provides up to 30dB of additional gain and can be assigned either before or after the clipping stage. Pre-Overdrive Boost Pushes the drive stage harder Adds saturation and compression Increases harmonic density Post-Overdrive Boost Raises output level Preserves gain structure Functions well for solos and level lifts This allows the Empress Drive to function as: - A standalone gain channel - A flexible stacking platform - A foundation drive tone - A clean-ish amp enhancer - A higher-gain saturation stage Mix Control & EQ The Mix control blends clean and driven signal together, helping preserve: - Pick attack - Amp character - Low-end clarity - Dynamic response Post-mix active shelving EQ provides additional tonal balancing with: - Active Bass control - Active Treble control This makes it easier to fine-tune the pedal across different amplifiers and rigs without excessive compromise. Adaptive Noise Gate An adaptive analogue noise gate monitors the incoming signal and dynamically suppresses unwanted noise at higher gain settings while avoiding abrupt gating behaviour or sustain loss. The gate remains subtle and largely transparent during normal playing. Analogue Metering The built-in analogue clipping meter provides real-time visual feedback showing how hard the overdrive stage is being driven. Selectable LED colours allow customisation of the display while offering a surprisingly useful visual reference for gain staging and dynamic response.
