New! Three Friars in the Ruins of a Cloister – Anonymous German Master – Catholic Art – Archival Quality
The ruins of a church or cloister were favorite subjects for 19th Century painters. They have various reasons; some to show the ancientness of our enduring Faith; others to show our Church in ruin. One painter in particular, who we hope to showcase soon, painted many church buildings wrecked by the French Revolution, yet still being used, to show that those proto-communists had not prevailed against the Faith. In all cases, though, they painted these scenes because they were awesome. There is a mystery, and forgive my shift in tone, a really cool vibe about these pictures. They carry some of the profound air of our Church. The anonymous painter of this picture, showing it on such a beautiful day, and with such a fine, intact, working church above the monks, seems to suggest that this ruined cloister is another historical vestige our Church, happily enduring. So much history in our Catholic traditions! For example, the priest's vestments include a garment derived from the Roman toga. Friends, our Church is the Eternal Rock, and God gives us many beautiful days to dwell within it. The painter is unknown, although there is some speculation: "In a letter dated January 7, 1991 to the previous owner, Dr. S. Gramlich, Berlin, suggested that either Wilhelm Gail or Max Hauschild were the painters of this picture. It is also possible that the artist came from the circle around Carl Blechen." This painting is sometimes called, "Three monks in the ruins of a late Gothic cloister." (source: lempertz.com) ** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good. It gives the picture a faux matted appearance. There is almost always a little more border either on the left-right sides, or the top-bottom, depending on whether the ratio of the art is wider or taller than the paper. We make Archival Quality fine art prints: – Acid-free paper– Archival pigments – Cardboard backer for sizes 11x14 and less. – Above story of the art– Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal-clear bag.– Rated to last 200+ years without fading if kept dry and out of the direct sun.
