Photinia fraseri Carre Rouge
Red Robin Carre Rouge A refined and more compact version of the classic 'Red Robin', this evergreen shrub adds year-round structure and a brilliant splash of scarlet to the garden. It is particularly prized for its new growth; in early Spring, the young leaves emerge in a deep, glowing crimson that is significantly more intense and longer-lasting than other varieties. This display continues throughout the Summer whenever the plant is pruned or produces fresh flushes of foliage. Compared to its traditional cousin, this variety offers a much tighter, more manageable growth habit. The leaves are smaller and more closely spaced, giving the plant a naturally dense, bushy form that stays lush right down to the ground. Carre Rouge is excellent for a formal hedge that requires less maintenance to keep its shape, but it is also perfect as a vibrant focal specimen, a neat rounded shrub, or a dense privacy screen. Its superior branching and smaller foliage also make it a far better candidate for large decorative patio containers than the more leggy alternatives. In late Spring, it may produce clusters of small, creamy-white flowers, though it is primarily grown for its stunning, multi-toned foliage. This is a robust and resilient performer, showing improved resistance to leaf spot in damp climates.
