■ Curator's Note Raktim Chatterjee's paintings examine the human condition through distorted and hybrid figures placed within ordinary domestic and social spaces. The bodies function as psychological states rather than representations — shaped by desire, fear, intimacy, consumption, and survival. Working in transparent watercolour on paper, he builds images through multiple layers and deliberate abrasion, suspending each work in the threshold between completion and collapse. Preparation for something. Yet the figure in the painting has neither a destination nor an object to prepare for. This suspended state resonates with the deliberately abraded watercolour surface, presenting the sensation of waiting in contemporary life. ■ About the Artist Raktim Chatterjee is a painter and video artist based in Hooghly, West Bengal, India. He studied at the Indian College of Art & Draftsmanship, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (BVA, 2004), and has exhibited continuously at major art institutions across India, including the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata and the Birla Academy of Art & Culture. In 2012, he participated in the Glenfiddich Artist Program, an international artist residency. Working primarily in transparent watercolour on paper, Chatterjee builds images through multiple layers and deliberate abrasion — retaining rawness and instability in the finished surface.
