The Perdomo Legacy Nicaraguan Shade Grown is the cigar the entire Legacy line was built to show off. Where the Connecticut and Maduro tuck the family's new hybrid leaf inside as a binder, this one puts it on the outside as the wrapper — the first time anyone has used a Nicaraguan shade-grown hybrid crossing Cuban and Cameroon seed. It's Nicholas Perdomo III's flagship tribute to his father, nearly five years in the making. Nick Perdomo III started developing the wrapper around 2014 at Finca Natalie in Estelí, on a plot of volcanic soil he chose specifically for it. Cuban seed brings the body and aroma; Cameroon seed brings the tooth, sweetness, and spice. The leaf is bale-aged 10 years, then finished a minimum of 10 months in bourbon barrels. Underneath sit Cuban-seed Nicaraguan binder and fillers, also aged a full decade. It runs medium to full. Cedar and leather lead, with a cinnamon spice off the hybrid wrapper playing against molasses sweetness and the oak of the barrel underneath. The reddish-brown wrapper carries a fine Cameroon-style tooth. The strength is calibrated — you get the full flavor without it knocking you sideways.
