Resurgence
Banff National Park, AB It became an unforgettable moment as I trudged through the knee- to waist-deep snow. In the safety of the company of other friends, I could capture this image with my 840mm lens, while keeping myself and The Boss safe. The Boss “post-holed” as he lumbered through the deep snow. Recently awakening from his winter hibernation, he was in search of any forage he could find. A winter-killed animal carcass had piqued his interest. That first meal, after going without food for such an extended period, must be so satisfying: It would restart the bear’s system as winter turned into spring. The Boss is one of his species’ earliest risers from hibernation, as is typical of older male grizzlies, but here again, The Boss is remarkable. He has been documented to have emerged on the 28th of February in 2020, beating all his competitors by far! Image captured by Jason Leo Bantle with All in the Wild Photography.
