6.72g GRIZIM 003 Pallasite Meteorite
On Offer: 6.72g nice individual of the pallasite meteorite Grizim 003. Official Name: Grizim 003 Type: Pallasite, PMG Date: 2022 Country: Adrar, Algeria. The Grizim 003 meteorite is a beautiful example of a pallasite with a potentially interesting formation history. Instead of unaltered iron-nickel metal (kamacite and taenite), the non silicate components of this pallasite are iron-oxides (likely magnetite and associated oxides) which are usually a sign of significant terrestrial weathering. However, this level of terrestrial oxidation also tends to significantly alter the silicates (usually olivine in the case of pallasites). The olivine in the Grizim 003 pallasite appear to be in relatively pristine condition, leading some researchers to speculate the iron-oxides may have formed in situ (indogenously) on its parent asteroid or possibly prior to that, before or during the impact that mixed the silicates and metal (or in this case possibly already converted iron-oxides). This is highly speculative and so far no hard evidence of this has been put forward by researchers. However, the conversion of native iron and iron-nickel alloys into iron-oxides such as magnetite (as opposed to rust), typically requires a low oxygen and low moisture environment, which arguably offers some anecdotal support to the hypothesis that the iron-oxides in the Grizim 003 pallasite may have formed indogenously on its parent asteroid or during the collision that created its parent body. Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Subrounded olivine grains with sizes up to ~1 cm, embedded in ~40 vol% iron oxides/hydroxides, which also occur as crosscutting veins in olivine. Only traces of unaltered metal were found, containing ~5 wt.% Ni. Schreibersite grains up to 3 mm occur. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean olivine composition: Fa13.1±0.2 (Fa12.8-13.3); Fe/Mn (at.): 45.4; n=10. Classification: Pallasite (main group), based on texture, grain size of olivine and olivine composition.
