Introduction TAKE YOUR ADVENTURES TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH THE NEW AX4! Our 4’ (1.2 m) whips are great for ultraportable outings. But when you need more punch...answer the call of the wild with the rugged AX4. Perfect for picnic table or tripod mounting in wind-swept terrain, the 8’ (2.5 m) AX4 boosts your signal as much as 6 dB. The AX4 is supplied with four 13' (4 m) radials, providing an efficient, symmetrical, and no-tune counterpoise. Resonant frequencies are ~7, 10, 14, and 21 MHz. A wide-range ATU, e.g. those in all Elecraft transceivers, handles final matching. Our versatile AXTC4 table clamp (see photos) bolts directly to the whip base. An antenna matching device (such as an ATU) is required with the AX4 for impedance matching. Resonances in the 7, 10, and 14 MHz jumper block settings fall in or near the 40, 30, and 20 meter ham bands, though frequencies may shift due to ground characteristics, radial wire length and placement, etc. The fourth setting, 21 MHz, is for use on 15 m, as well as 17, 12, and 10 meters with a wide-range ATU. Elecraft transceivers include optional built-in ATUs that have the required range. NOTE: When using whip antennas above QRP power levels, especially on non-resonant bands, a balun may be required to keep coax shield radiation from interfering with your transceiver. The Elecraft BL3 is specifically designed to allow power of up to 100 W CW/SSB (50 W DATA) to be used with the AX4. Specs Bands Up to 7, via four band-jumper settings: 7, 10, 14, and 21 MHz. Resonances are approxiate. 21 MHz setting is used for 18, 24.9, and 28 MHz.* * A wide-range ATU is generally required to compensate for whip height above ground, radial configuration, ground characteristics, and inducatance variation. All Elecraft transceiver internal ATUs, as well as the T1 20 W ATU, can match load SWRs of 10:1 min. and meet AX4 requirements. For ATUs with insufficient range, a match can often be achieved by adjusting whip length. Gain Approx. 6 dB relative to antennas with 4’ (1.25 m) whips Dimensions Whip: 8’ 2” (2.5 m) extended; 13.3” (34 cm) collapsed. Base unit: 6.7” (17 cm). AXTC4 table clamp: 5.8” (15 cm) long; Max table thickness, 3” (7.5 cm). BL3 balun: 3” dia. x 1.1” H (7.6 dia. x 2.8 cm). Weight AX4 base unit, 8.8 oz. (250 g). Whip: 3.8 oz. (108 g). AXTC4 table clamp, 3.6 oz. (100 g). BL3 balun, 6.0 oz. (170 g). Max. Power 100 W CW/SSB, 50 W data/AM/FM* * If RFI symptoms are observed at the transceiver or at an attached computer, reduce power and/or use a high-isolation, high-power balun. (The Elecraft BL3 is optimized for high isolation on all AX4 bands.) If SWR increases during transmit, reduce power to avoid excessive balun heating. Radial Wires Four 13’ (4.0 m) radials are supplied. Lay the radials directly on the ground in an “X” pattern for best match and to avoid a tripping hazard. Always connect the radials to the AX4’s ground thumb screw, not to the transceiver. This is especially important if a balun is used. Construction Corrosion-resistant whip and hardware; nylon base unit with acrylic toroid cover. High-Q inductors (T94-6) wound with high-temp enamel wire. Convection cooled via rain- and insect-resistant louvered apertures.
