It has a ‘Marian Mark’ (overlapping v) on the outside which historically were carved into houses to ward off evil spirits and believed to invoke the protection of the Virgin Mary. These symbols were often placed at vulnerable points like doors, windows, and fireplaces to act as a spiritual barrier, protecting against perceived threats like sickness, poor harvests, and the malevolent influence of witches. It also has a ‘Hexafoil’ or Daisy wheel on the inside of the door. These exciting protection marks were likely added to guard against curses or bad luck in the food supply. Over time, the cupboard itself has continued to collect its own story. The surname “Hughes” has been carved into the door by a later owner, and traces of old Aberystwyth newspaper still remain inside where the shelves were once lined. The surface is wonderfully textured, with generations of layered paint creating a rich, worn finish that could never be replicated. A fabulous piece of Welsh country history. Strong, solid, and still perfectly usable. It would bring character to any room. Condition is commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound with an abundance of age related wear and patina. Measures 95cm (H) x 66cm (W) x 34.5cm (D) Weighs 26.80 kg SHIPPING RETURNS
