Rare 1930s–40s Tinplate Clockwork Saloon Car, Green Lithograph, Return Bumper Mechanism, Marked “Foreign”, Working
A small and beautiful pre-war or early wartime tinplate clockwork car, dating to the 1930s–40s. Marked “Foreign” on the rear — the standard marking used on toys exported to the British market from Continental European manufacturers, most likely German, during this period. A genuinely rare and characterful little piece. The car is pressed tin, lithographed in a rich metallic green with cream and gold printed detailing throughout: a heart-shaped radiator grille, bonnet louvers, door and window outlines, running boards, and a rear badge panel all picked out in fine printed line work. The overall form is a streamlined closed saloon in the aerodynamic style typical of the late 1930s — low, rounded, and purposeful. The body is very well preserved with the lithography largely intact and vivid, showing only light surface wear and scratching consistent with age. The clockwork mechanism is working. The car features a return bumper mechanism — when the car hits an obstacle, the bumper triggers a reverse action, sending the car back in the other direction. This was a desirable feature in pre-war tinplate toys. The bumper itself is the distinctive wide flat grey pressed tin blade visible at the front. No key is present; the car will need a compatible replacement key to wind it. The underside is finished in cream-painted tin, showing the four pressed tin wheels with separate grey hubs, and the clockwork mechanism housing. The rear of the car carries a partially intact transfer or decal featuring a stag’s head crest motif alongside the “FOREIGN” marking — a curious and charming detail. A beautiful example in remarkably good condition for its age. Length: Approximately 10cm Condition: Working clockwork mechanism. No key. Light surface wear to lithography. Rear decal partially intact. All four wheels present and intact.
