Height | 45 ft. (13.7 m) Geographic position | 47° 31' 16" N, 52° 37' 20" W Elevation on earth | 240 ft. (73 m) Built in 1955 to replace the original 1835 structure, the new Cape Spear Lighthouse is a concrete octagonal tower standing 13.7 metres tall. The Fresnel lens transferred from the old lighthouse continues to produce its signature three white flashes every fifteen seconds — a thread of continuity between old and new. The Cantwell family, whose remarkable dynasty began with James Cantwell's appointment in 1846, continued to tend this new tower until Gerald Cantwell, the last of the line, stepped down in 1997 when the station was de-staffed. The tower is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard and remains an active aid to navigation on the easternmost point of North America. Keepers: Frank Cantwell (1944–1965), Martin Hefferan (1965–1982), Gerald Cantwell (1982–1997) Ref.: lighthousefriends.com
