Drypoint Printing with Clare Winslow (Aug 8) - on Saturday Saturday, August 8, 2026 10:00 a.m. to 01:00 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m. Location: Washington Printmakers Gallery, 1675 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest Washington, DC 20007 Class Description: Drypoint is a direct and expressive way to make prints. You use a sharp tool to draw into a plate, and the burr from each scratch holds ink to create rich, velvety lines you won’t find in other mediums. There’s no need for acid, chemicals, or any previous printmaking experience. In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll use plexiglass plates, which are easy to draw on and perfect for trying this technique for the first time. You’ll learn how to transfer an image onto your plate, create tone and texture with different marks, ink and wipe the plate, and use the press to make your first prints. We’ll go over how to prepare your plate, explore various mark-making methods, and cover the basics of making editions. By the end, you’ll have a finished plate and a small set of prints to take home. This one-session workshop is a great way to start exploring intaglio printmaking, especially if you enjoy drawing or want an easy introduction to using a printing press. Age group: Minimum 14 Number of participants: 6 Cost: $100 Supplies: $100 + $20 materials fee paid directly to instructor (Zelle/Venmo/Cash preferred). Materials Provided by Instructor - A printing press, plexiglass plates, drypoint needles, inks, high quality printmaking paper, tape, tarlatan for wiping. About Clare: Clare Winslow is a Maryland-based printmaker whose work explores abstraction, process, and memory through layered, gestural images. She studied fine art at The Catholic University of America and printmaking at the Corcoran College of Art, and her practice centers on experimental screen printing and monotype techniques that translate beautifully to gel printing. A four-time recipient of the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County’s Artists & Scholars Project Grant and a past resident at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and in Orquevaux, France, she has exhibited widely throughout the Washington, DC region and beyond. Clare teaches at venues around the DC area, sharing approachable, process-based methods that invite students to experiment and discover their own visual language.
