A lovely mint, never-hinged example of Hussey's Special Message & Letter Post, Scott 87L59, printed in blue, perforated, with what appears to be full original gum showing no sign of hinging or disturbance. The design features the iconic running messenger vignette - one of the most recognized images in American local stamp philately - with "HUSSEY'S" arched at top, "SPECIAL MESSAGE / LETTER POST" on either side, and the proprietor's imprint "Robt. Easson, Propr. / 54 Pine St." at the foot. A light offset impression from another stamp is visible in the gum on the reverse - a period storage artifact that does not affect the front. The Hussey/Easson Story George Tuttle Hussey founded his "Bank and Insurance City Post" in New York City in 1854, growing it into one of the most successful private local posts in American history, serving banks, insurance firms, and commercial businesses throughout lower Manhattan with same-day document delivery. In 1875 Hussey retired due to ill health and sold the operation to Robert Easson. Easson's name first appeared on stamps in 1877, still operating from 54 Pine Street. This stamp dates from that Easson-era period of the business. Hussey's stamps occupy a unique place in philatelic history - Hussey was actually the first large-scale maker of forgeries in the US, reprinting not only his own stamps but those of other local posts, with both J.W. Scott and S. Allan Taylor subsequently following his lead. Reprint vs. Genuine - A Key Diagnostic J.W. Scott made reprints of the Hussey 54 Pine St. stamps, and they can be distinguished from originals by a 4mm break in the bottom frame line directly under the "54." The seller has examined this stamp carefully under magnification and confirms the frame line under "54" is continuous with no break present - consistent with a genuine example rather than a Scott reprint. Specialist buyers are of course encouraged to conduct their own examination upon receipt. Condition Perforated. Appears mint, never hinged with full original gum showing no visible disturbance.
