'Bird Lounge Chair' by Harry Bertoia for Knoll International, (1952) Italy Harry Bertoia ‘Bird’ Chair for KnolL Designed in 1952 by Italian-American designer and sculptor Harry Bertoia for Knoll, the Bird Chair remains one of the most recognisable and sculptural forms of post-war modern design. Part of Bertoia’s groundbreaking wire furniture collection, the chair explored the idea of furniture as both structure and drawing - using industrial steel rod to create something remarkably light, open and organic in appearance. Bertoia originally described the collection as being “mainly made of air”, a reference to the way the wire construction occupies space without feeling visually heavy. Despite its delicate appearance, the chair is exceptionally comfortable, particularly when paired with the large upholstered cover which softens the geometric frame and creates the chair’s distinctive silhouette. This example has been newly upholstered in a reissued textile by Danish artist and designer Gunnar Aagaard Andersen. Originally designed in the 1950s and reissued by Kvadrat, the fabric reflects Andersen’s interest in geometric abstraction, typography and experimental visual rhythm. Andersen moved fluidly between art, furniture, graphics and architecture, and was part of the wider Scandinavian avant-garde movement of the post-war period. The bold graphic pattern works particularly well against the delicate wire structure of the Bird Chair, giving the piece a more architectural presence while remaining true to its mid-century origins. A chair that sits somewhere between furniture, sculpture and textile work, equally striking from every angle.
