What if a photograph could take on the tone of time itself, soft, warm, and quietly enduring? Participants are introduced to Van Dyke Brown printing, a historic alternative photographic process first patented in 1895. Named after the baroque painter Anthony van Dyck, this iron-silver process builds on early techniques like salt printing and cyanotype, producing images in a distinctive spectrum of sepia tones, from warm brown to deep, grounded blacks. While rooted in history, the process remains approachable. Compared to traditional salt prints, Van Dyke offers richer tonal range and more stable blacks when properly washed, while retaining a simplicity that makes it an ideal entry point into alternative printing. Over a 2-hour workshop, participants will explore both the background and hands-on practice of the process, including an introduction to its history, pre-prepared chemistry, safe handling, and step-by-step printing. The session also includes basic troubleshooting and guidance on achieving different tonal qualities. By the end of the workshop, each participant will bring home: • 2–3 A5 Van Dyke prints (depending on time and session flow) • 1 digital negative prepared for future printing • 1 informational pamphlet on Van Dyke printing This workshop is designed for beginners and image-makers curious about historical processes, offering a gentle and tactile introduction to printing beyond the digital screen. About the Instructor Christopher Gio Sarsono (b. 2000, Bandung, Indonesia) is a photographer, printmaker, and founder of Dog Days Photo Lab. He began his photographic practice in 2016 and further developed his approach through Kelas Pagi Yogyakarta in 2019, alongside programs such as RAWS Attack Class, Panna Future Talents, Photobook as Object by RPS Tokyo, and Yogurt Lab 2025.
