Expressive Portraiture Workshop
Light, volume, and color are crucial elements of the artistic world. In this workshop, these ideas will be investigated through portraiture with an emphasis on accurate observation and expressive interpretation. Participants will have the option of either drawing or painting the live model while working through a clear and structured process designed to make each stage more accessible and effective. The class will facilitate both drawing and painting by breaking the process down into digestible steps. Participants will begin with a linear block-in that creates a strong foundation for the rendering stage that follows. One of the central questions of the course is how the physics of light on form differs from our perception of value. Through each step, instruction will guide artists toward a clearer understanding of how light reveals structure, how form turns in space, and how a portrait can gain conviction through the truthful depiction of three dimensional volume. Demonstrations will be included throughout to illustrate the methodology in a practical and direct way. The goal will be to complete a finished portrait by the end of the course. Beginning to advanced artists are welcome. This unique course explores how an academic approach to modeling form, combined with expressive decision making, can deepen an artist’s ability to create compelling portrait work. The foundation of the workshop is the principle of form itself, understanding how painters can sculpt volume in relation to a light source and how that understanding can be translated into a more personal and vital language. Special emphasis will be placed on composition through dynamic symmetry, approached as the skeleton of the four corners of the canvas, panel, or surface. This gives artists a way to think of the format as an active structure rather than a passive boundary, allowing composition to feel more intentional, harmonious, and alive. Lectures and demonstrations will address the properties of form, the physics of light, optics, and the relationship between structure and expression. Students will begin with preliminary studies from the live model and develop their work through a process that balances rigor with freedom. The course is designed to offer both technical clarity and room for contemporary experimentation, helping each participant strengthen not only their understanding of portrait construction, but also their own artistic voice. Silver Brushes presents this workshop as an opportunity to offer artists a focused and inspiring learning experience rooted in observation, structure, and expression. By combining clear instruction with a thoughtful approach to light, volume, composition, and mark making, this recorded two day program is designed to have lasting value both as a live educational event and as a downloadable course afterward. To further enrich the experience, a Silver Brushes brush set will be offered as part of a bundle with the recorded workshop, allowing participants to purchase the video together with the tools used in the demonstrations so they can follow the process with greater continuity and confidence.
