The Liga Privada Year of the Rat is a limited annual release from Drew Estate's Unico Serie — the small-batch line where each cigar gets its own blend in its own single size. It launched in 2016 as a lounge exclusive at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, home of the Florida Panthers. It returns every spring through Drew Diplomat retailers, and it sells out fast. The name isn't random. 1996 was the year the Panthers made their Stanley Cup Final run, the year Drew Estate was founded, and the Year of the Rat in the Chinese zodiac. Panthers fans threw rubber rats on the ice after every goal that season. Drew Estate built a cigar around all three. The blend is classic Liga Privada broadleaf. A dark, oily Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper over a Brazilian binder, with aged Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers inside. It was blended in Nicaragua right after the original Dirty Rat and carries the same DNA — earthy, peppery, with a natural tobacco sweetness that keeps the strength in check. The profile leads with black pepper and earth, then fills out with leather, cedar, and cocoa through the middle. It builds from medium-full to full, so it smokes best with something in the glass and time on your hands.
