That's the whole idea: put the toughness where the paddle actually meets rock, so you're not paddling a plastic-and-aluminum club to get it.Here's the honest part most durability paddles won't tell you. To make the whole paddle bombproof, the cheap ones go plastic handle and heavy aluminum shaft, and you feel every ounce of it by hour two. We didn't. The shaft is a carbon and fiberglass hybrid, and the handle is genuine composite fiberglass, both lightweight and high-performance. That means the same care you'd give any good paddle still applies to the shaft and handle: they'll scratch, scuff, or crack if you throw them in a truck bed or drop them on concrete. The blade takes abuse. The shaft and handle earn their keep by staying light in your hands, so treat them like the performance parts they are.The adjustment system is the same sealed lever lock from our carbon Tough Blade, with an alignment slot so the blade and handle line up straight every time you set it. Most paddles in this range use push-button adjusters that never quite align and let water seep into the shaft until it sloshes, gains weight, and some of them sink. Ours stays sealed and dry. And it floats, which somehow most nylon paddles don't.The blade shape is efficient for nylon, easy to pull, and smooth on your shoulders and joints. It breaks into three pieces, packs flat in your board bag, and adjusts from 65 to 83 inches, so one paddle fits everyone in the house and travels anywhere you go.One honest tradeoff to know. A polymer blade flexes where a carbon blade stays stiff, and that flex is exactly what lets it take rock strikes without cracking. It also means a little of your energy goes into the blade instead of the water on every stroke. Maximum blade durability, not maximum efficiency. A stiff carbon blade puts more of your effort into forward motion, and if you paddle long and hard that difference adds up. For everyday paddling it's a tradeoff most people happily make. At 1 lb 14 oz it isn't featherweight either, and a nylon blade never will be. If you want more efficiency and a lighter, stiffer blade, step up to the Tough Blade Carbon. If you have plenty of experience, paddle often, and want the highest performance possible, that's the Ruckus. This one is for everything else, which for most paddlers is most of the time.
