PEI 1991017, 1991 (inv. 7021) by Jean-Pierre Maury

Through a carefully structured arrangement of repeated cross-shaped motifs, PEI 1991017 explores the visual possibilities of rhythm, repetition and optical interaction. Maury constructs the composition with remarkable precision, allowing the individual elements to merge into a larger field that seems to expand and contract before the viewer's eyes. The work reflects his longstanding interest in perception, where subtle variations in form and spacing create an ever-changing visual experience. Jean-Pierre Maury was a leading figure of what he termed the 'mouvance construite' — the constructed- art movement that flourished in Belgium and France from the 1980s onward. In 1988 he co-founded, with painters including Marcel-Louis Baugniet, Jo Delahaut and Léon Wuidar, the review Mesures art international. His paintings pursue a rigorous, geometric language rooted in alchemical symbolism, balancing colour, line and structure into what he called 'dynamic stabilities'.
