A wonderfully unusual pair of mid-century 18ct gold emerald and diamond stud earrings, dating from around the 1940s–1950s and designed in the form of stylised tulips. Each earring is set with a round cabochon emerald of a wonderfully vivid green, with a small diamond beneath adding just a touch of sparkle. Sweeping polished gold leaves rise around the stones to create the wonderfully sculptural, almost architectural tulip-like form so characteristic of jewellery from this period. Floral jewellery enjoyed enormous popularity during and after the Second World War, when bold, three-dimensional gold designs brought a sense of colour and optimism back to jewellery. Here, the rich yellow gold and green emeralds make a particularly striking combination. Emerald is the birthstone for May and has long been associated with love, renewal, hope and new beginnings, symbolism that feels especially appropriate for a jewel inspired by a spring flower. Despite their age, these have a remarkably modern feel. They are small enough to wear easily every day but have far more personality than a simple pair of gemstone studs.
