Our Lady of Lourdes (or the Immaculate Conception of Lourdes or, more simply, Our Lady of Lourdes) is the name with which the Catholic Church venerates Mary, following the apparitions she had in 1858 to Bernadette Soubirous. The name of the place refers to the French municipality of Lourdes. In whose territory, between 11 February and 16 July 1858, the young Bernadette Soubirous, a fourteen-year-old local peasant girl, reported having witnessed eighteen apparitions of a “beautiful lady” in a grotto not far from the small suburb of Massabielle. "I saw a lady dressed in white. She wore a white dress, a white veil, a blue belt, and a yellow rose on her feet." This image of the Virgin, dressed in white, with a blue belt around her waist and a yellow rose at each foot, later entered classical iconography. A statue of the Madonna was placed in 1864 on the site indicated by Bernadette as the location of the apparitions. Over time, an imposing sanctuary developed around the grotto of the apparitions.
