Autumn in the Lake District – Residential Photography Workshop (October 28th to 31st 2027)
Join me for an unforgettable four-day photography workshop in the heart of the Lake District, where we’ll capture the breathtaking beauty of this iconic National Park during its peak seasonal display. We’ll immerse ourselves in the diverse landscapes, capturing stunning mountain vistas, tranquil lakeside scenes, dramatic waterfalls, and picturesque tarns all framed by vibrant autumn foliage. Why the Lake District? The Lake District is a photographer’s paradise, offering a diverse range of landscapes, from rugged mountains and cascading waterfalls to serene lakes and charming villages. Autumn is arguably the most magical time to visit, as the valleys fill with stunning autumnal trees, fiery orange hues, and atmospheric morning mists. This workshop will allow you to experience the full spectrum of the Lake District’s seasonal beauty, capturing its essence through your lens. Our Photographic Journey: Easy-Access Locations: This workshop is designed with accessibility in mind, focusing on locations that offer stunning views with minimal walking. However, if the group is keen on a more challenging hike, we can certainly explore some of the higher and more remote areas (Loughrigg is a fantastic little hill which is worth the effort). Diverse Landscapes: We’ll visit a variety of locations, including: Iconic waterfalls: Aira Force, Stock Ghyll Force, Rydal Grot all surrounded by golden leaves, Picturesque lakes: Ullswater, Derwentwater, Brothers Water, Buttermere and Coniston Water. Stunning viewpoints: Walla Crag, Surprise View, Latrigg, Ashness Bridge, Tewet Tarn, Blea Tarn, Tarn How’s, Holme Fell & Castlerigg Stone Circle. Flexible Itinerary: Our itinerary will be adapted based on the weather and the group’s preferences, ensuring we make the most of our time in the Lake District. Our Home Base: Self-Catering Cottage: We’ll be staying in a comfortable self-catering cottage in Hartsop near Ullswater and at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass, a stunning location with equally stunning views. You could almost do photography in the garden! I have used this cottage twice before and it has been absolutely perfect for our needs. We have quick access to Brother’s Water and are well positioned for Aira Force and the Duke of Portland Boathouse. Amenities and Comfort: The cottage offers all the amenities you’ll need, including Wi-Fi, a washing machine, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious lounge for relaxation and post-processing. Please note room sizes are given out on a booking basis for fairness, there are 2 king rooms, a twin and a single. You will have your own private room. The single room has stunning views over the valley. Other notes: The cottage is the highest in the village and is along a farm track which may not be suitable for low cars (a standard family car such as a Ford Focus is fine). If you have a vehicle such as this you may need to leave it at one of the car parks in the village. Once parked you don’t need to worry as I’ll be driving every day. There are two bathrooms in the cottage but only one proper shower. The second bathroom has a bath and a shower attachment. Neither of these have caused any issue with a bit of forethought on my previous workshops here using this accommodation. Flexible Dining: The self-catering arrangement allows for flexibility in meal times and catering to dietary requirements. You can cook your own meals, collaborate with others in the group, or enjoy dining out at local pubs and restaurants. A Typical Day: Sunrise and Sunset Shoots: We’ll focus on capturing the magical light of sunrise and sunset, visiting different locations each day to make the most of the golden hour. However at this time of year the daylight is short so we may be out for larger parts of the day with short breaks in the middle of the day for lunch etc. Daytime Exploration: During the day, we’ll have time to explore additional locations, relax at the cottage, review our images, and learn post-processing techniques. Flexible Schedule: The daily schedule will be adapted based on the weather and the group’s preferences, allowing for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. My approach: I have adopted a workshop style that may differ from others. I want you to get out there at the best times and often this is golden hour if the weather is suitable. I prefer an approach of teaching you on how I would approach each day if I were there to take my own photos. This usually means being out first thing and back last thing. At this time of year the days aren’t too long and sunrise and sunset is sociable, so during the day we will also explore waterfalls etc which makes sense as well as taking short breaks if needed to get lunch etc. Weather Contingency: The Lake District weather can be unpredictable, but I’m well-versed in adapting to different conditions. We’ll make the most of the available light and explore alternative locations if needed, ensuring a rewarding experience regardless of the weather. Learning and Skill Development: Throughout the workshop, I’ll provide guidance and instruction on various photography techniques, including: Focusing: Mastering the art of achieving sharp focus in different conditions. Tripod Usage: Utilising tripods effectively to ensure stability and maximise image quality. Filters and Exposure Blending: Understanding when and how to use filters and exposure blending techniques. Composition: Developing your compositional eye to create compelling and balanced images. Working with Light: Learning how to harness the unique qualities of natural light in the landscape. Additional Information: Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. This workshop offers a balance of accessible locations and optional longer walks, catering to different fitness levels and preferences. Group Size: Maximum 4 participants for personalised attention and a more intimate learning experience. Included: Expert tuition, accommodation in a self-catering cottage, guidance on photography techniques, kit list, discount codes, and a pre-workshop questionnaire. I have two sets of Kase Filters available for the group to use along with an exclusive discount codeprovided upon booking. Ideal if you are new to filters, want to try out magnetic filters or looking to swap systems so please ask to look, even if you have some currently. I carry a variety of stepping rings too to fit most lenses. I will also have spare tripods available for use. We will meet at 10:00 on the first day for a full day of photography. The final day will finish at sunset (17:00) given the time of year. Because of the early start time and late finish there will be periods where we can’t have our gear in the accommodation so please bear this in mind with what you pack. I will drive us during these periods. Ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Lake District and capture stunning images of its iconic landscapes?
