Molecule 04
One ingredient, no pyramid, no blending. That is the entire proposition of the Escentric Molecules line, and Molecule 04 is Geza Schoen's 2017 eau de toilette built from nothing but Javanol, a sandalwood molecule created in a Givaudan laboratory in 1996. There is no top, heart or base in the usual sense because there is only one material in the bottle. A Molecule 04 decant in Bangladesh is the only sane way to test something this polarising.Fragrance NotesTop: Javanol (sandalwood molecule)Heart: JavanolBase: JavanolThe ScentJavanol is sandalwood stripped of its weight. Where natural sandalwood is creamy, dense and a little milky, this is sheer, radiant and faintly metallic, holding the glow of the real material without the mass. Schoen describes it as smelling like liquid grapefruit peel poured over a bed of velvety cream-coloured roses, and that is a fair description of the strange citrus-rose shimmer sitting on top of the wood. On skin it stays close for some people and radiates for others, and there is no development to speak of because there is nothing else in there to develop into. The dry-down is the same thing, softer. What makes this fragrance genuinely divisive is anosmia. A portion of the population cannot smell Javanol at all, and reviews split into two irreconcilable camps as a result. One group reports that it barely registers, calling it too soft and unwearable as a standalone, useless even as a layering base because anything else buries it. The other group finds it overwhelming, with one wearer saying a single spray fills a room and another giving their bottle away because it scented an entire closet and would not wash out of clothing. Both are describing the same liquid. Some also report going nose blind to it quickly, which is common with this material. The house sells a companion, Escentric 04, that builds a full composition around the same molecule with pink grapefruit peel, juniper, orris and rose, and reviewers who cannot make Molecule 04 work often get on far better with that one. Schoen's own explanation is worth repeating: he says Javanol is like truffle, where a few shavings are enough, which is why he uses far less of it than he used of Iso E Super in earlier releases. That restraint is the whole design. There is no perfumery here in the conventional sense, only a material and your nose. When to WearHot weather, casual daytime wear and office hours through spring and summer, where its transparency works to your advantage. Several wearers say it comes alive specifically in high temperatures. Fits our Musk | Skin collection.Who Is It ForSomeone who likes the idea of a skin scent with no perfume structure at all, or anyone curious about how a single aroma molecule behaves on its own.If you want the same experiment with a different molecule, Molecule 01 + Mandarin adds a citrus overlay to the house's Iso E Super original.
