Antique Handmade Terra Cotta Floor Tile Reclaimed from a Provençal Farmhouse Reclaimed from a historic farmhouse in Provence, these antique French terra cotta tiles are more than 100 years old and retain the surface character that can only develop through generations of use. Handmade in approximately 6½" x 6½" squares and 1" thick, the tiles have the substantial proportions of traditional French farmhouse flooring. Their color ranges from earthy brick red and faded rose to deep aubergine, brown and near-charcoal, with beautiful variations created by the natural clay and historic firing process. The Var region of Provence has been an important center of terra cotta production for centuries, prized for its deposits of fine, iron-rich red clay. Historic kilns produced floor tiles whose surfaces developed remarkable variations as flame, heat and firing conditions interacted with the clay. Salernes in particular became renowned for its red ferruginous clay and terra cotta production. This reclaimed lot was removed from the kitchen and dining areas of an old village farmhouse, where more than a century of footsteps and daily life softened the surfaces and deepened their natural patina. Subtle wear, irregular edges, firing marks, pits and variations from tile to tile are not imperfections—they are the record of the material's handmade origins and long architectural history. Installed together, the colors create the wonderfully irregular floor associated with old houses of southern France: warm, grounded and impossible to reproduce convincingly with newly manufactured terra cotta. This antique terra cotta tile pairs beautifully with our antiqued Black French oak floors, as its charcoal-black firing marks echo the French black oak while warm red clay creates the rich contrast that together exude a stunning, historic interior.
